Chanters 'n' Ranters

CHANTERS N’ RANTERS are four well-established Bradford-based solo performers. Two are sharply contrasting singer-songwriters: the non-stop festival legend that is CAPTAIN HOTKNIVES and the much-vaunted purveyor of haunting melodies GERRARD BELL-FIFE. Generations apart, the other two are both powerful performer-poets: LUKE TATTY HOGGARTH and NICK TOCZEK. They have joined forces in the wake of the pandemic to offer an exciting and varied night’s entertainment that neatly blends comedy with originality, politics with entertainment, and passion with power. For this, their debut tour, they’re delighted to have, as their special guest, the truly brilliant Leeds-based hip-hop and rap busker CHUBBY CHUBBSTA and her partner, DJ Joe Blendz. Five seasoned and contrasting acts in one night. Not to be missed!

Acclaimed performance poet, Nick Toczek, has published more than fifty books and released numerous albums of songs and of spoken word. His latest books include Voices In My Head (2019, Caboodle Books), Corona Diary (2020, Mutiny 2000), and The Columbus Memoirs and Other Tales (2022, Mutiny 2000). In the past two years, he’s also released four albums of music, each on coloured vinyl.

‘See him if you can. He’s brilliant.’ The Stage.

A prime mover in the new wave of ranting poets, Luke Tatty Hoggarth is sharp, funny, political and always entertaining. His experience co-hosting the Punk And Disorderly Show on Phoenix FM, together with being a regular attendee of gigs at the 1-in-12 Club, inspired him to start writing and performing. He’s since become a leading promoter of poetry gigs in Bradford. His first collection of poems, Please Buy Me So I Can Pay My Rent, is published just in time for this tour by LS Arts.

Multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter Gerrard Bell-Fife is the sweetheart of the Bradford nu-folk scene. Originally from Nottingham where he began performing live music when he was nineteen, he’s lived in Bradford since 2011. As a regular performer at the 1-in-12 Club, he’s supported such acts as Titus Andronicus, Danbert Nobacon (ex-Chumbawamba), and the wonderful Get Cape, Wear Cape, Fly. He’s also toured with Perkie, Crywank, Mickey Dey, and Me Rex.

The Bradford icon that is Captain Hotknives started performing in 2004. As an itinerant musician and an in-yer-face brilliantly witty improv lyricist, he’s been touring the UK ever since with his winning brand of edgy comic punky rock. His major festival appearances have included Glastonbury, Beat-Herder and Rebellion. His calling-card is his outrageously infectious humour.

…and our special guest act: Chubby Chubbsta began her hip-hop career in 2017 with her partner, DJ Joe Blendz who’s been a hip-hop fan and record collector since the mid-90s. His No Nonsense Hip-Hop Show goes out on Fresh Leeds every Saturday (10pm-midnight). Chubbsta & Blendz can be found busking on the streets of Leeds City Centre where they’ve honed their craft performing to shoppers, with Blendz using his PTO1 portable turntable to add some scratching to Chubbsta’s conscious rap on topics such as homelessness, empowerment and strength in adversity.

The Bradford quartet are planning further Chanters 'n' Ranters tours in April/May 2023 and again in Sept/Oct 2023... then onward to 2025, the year in which Bradford will be the UK City of Culture.
